Dense Fog Forces Flight Cancellations in India’s New Delhi
Airlines operating from New Delhi’s airport said on X that “poor visibility” caused by thick fog had affected flight operations across all carriers.
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, said the capital was experiencing its “first hint of winter fog this morning, and visibility around the airport is currently reduced.”
Authorities have not released official figures on disruptions, but an Indian broadcaster, citing data from Flightradar24, reported that about 100 flights were cancelled and more than 300 were delayed at Delhi airport.
The aviation chaos comes as New Delhi continues to battle dangerously high pollution levels that have persisted for several days.
According to data from India’s Central Pollution Control Board, the city’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 461 on Sunday evening. An AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as poor, 301 to 400 as very poor, and 401 to 500 as severe. Experts warn that air quality in the severe range can affect even healthy individuals.
In response, authorities rolled out emergency anti-pollution measures to curb the smog and advised residents — particularly vulnerable groups — to remain indoors.
The Singapore High Commission in New Delhi also issued an advisory on Monday urging its citizens to follow local guidance, advising people to stay indoors, especially children and those with respiratory or cardiac conditions, and to wear masks if they must go outside.
Air pollution remains a chronic problem in New Delhi and typically worsens during winter, when crop stubble burning in neighboring regions combines with emissions from coal-fired power plants and industrial facilities surrounding the city.
